It's often difficult for people, especially if they've never been to a therapist or counselor before, to take the first steps. It can be a hard decision to make to decide that you need to talk with someone, and just as daunting to actually make that first appointment. There are many styles of therapy out there, and many types of therapists, and trying to choose can be paralyzing. You want someone who will be understanding and insightful, as well as challenging. You want someone who will be empathic and knowledgeable, someone you can feel comfortable to talk with... sometimes it's also nice just to know that you can talk about anything and have it be private and confidential, and that the person you're talking to isn't part of the rest of your life...
